Rusted Track - Repair

I have a nice N scale layout that I found at an antique store (actually my wife found it).

There are sections of rusted track. I don’t want to replace track. Is there a way to clean track of rust & not have it come back?

It depends how far the rust is down, like only surface rust or is it rusted through?

A Scotch Brite pad will do well for surface rust.

It seems to be surface rust. I tried naval jelly and then rust preventer but it came back.

Any help will be apreciated.

Are you sure it it rust? Check with a magnet to see if the rail is steel. Don’t know of any brands that were steel.

Sand with a pretty gritty piece of sand paper and then go over with bright boy and pad with rail zip on it, if it is actually steel. Good luck!

I just picked up a 50’s Tyco set from a house I’m working at and that has steel rails Ned.

Have fun & be safe,

Some US domestic HO rail was galvanized steel, Lifelike I think? After you clean it enough to wear through it rusts overnight. Metal polish will help as will running the trains everyday. Wahl clipper oil didn’t seem to help much. I finally threw it away. Fred

50/50 depends on the depth.
