I haven’t even used my original one yet but this package has a large bottle of paint that is supposed to be the correct color for a main. They were also smart enough to make the bottle neck the same size as the painter so you can put the applicator right on it.
I think the Rusty Rails Painter is the best MRR specific tool I have ever come across. It is fast and does a good job.
I like to do a coat of Rust Brown and then a second lighter coat of the Shale colour. The rollers do a great job on the tie plates. I got five colours of paint when I got mine and am changing the colours as I go from the Mountains to the Prairies.
I don’t wipe the rails with a cloth as I go as I found I was getting some of the paint off the sides as well. Instead I let it dry a bit and then just run my thumb nail along the top of the rail. Doing that makes a nice clean cut between the top of the rail and the side.
It’s [tup][tup][bow] for the Rusty Rails Painter in my book. And it is fairly inexpensive as well.
The Rusty Rails painter works great on code 100 track, but has issues with smaller rail. I just use my air brush with Floquil ‘Rail Tie Brown’ on my Atlas code 83 trackage.
