Our local newspaper ran a photo on the back page the other day. It was a “unit train” of medium sized camper trailers that had been especially built for victims of the Gulf Coast flooding.
That would be an interesting load but it is rarely the method of transporting RV’s and trailers. The trailer capital of the world is northeast Indiana in the triangle formed by Elkhart, Plymouthand Napanee. To the best of my knowledge there isn’t even a rail siding at any of the plants. Try travelling US 6 in that area and you wil be passed by hudreds of mom and pop drivers hauling trailers to dealers all over the country. Never have seen a load of them coming through Chicago on rail in thirty years of living here. So if you want to model it have at it. Just be aware it is an exception rather than a common occurence.
The loads are all in Mexico, especially Copper Canyon. There are several commercial groups doing this. Ther trip is fantastic but pricey. I have never seen nor heard of delivery on a flat car. These trips occassional go elsewhere, but the main trip is from El Paso to the Baha and San Diago.
I think there’s a HO scale Euro RV out there (I’ve seen a photo, it looks like a pretty good model of a mid-'90s Hymer A class) but I’m not sure who makes them. I’ve been scouring hobby shops in the hope of finding one that I could repaint to match our 1:1 scale example…
