I bought a 2179W (1952 turbine) set recently and all is well except for the rw transformer. When I press the button for the whistle it works fine- it just won’t stop like it is stuck. The button comes up fine it just keeps going. Eventually after turning the power off a few times it quits. I know prolonged whistle use will kill the rectifier disk so I want to solve this. Any suggestions? Thanks
It’s not clear whether this is a problem with the tender or with the transformer. Do you have other transformers or whistle tenders that work properly?
If it is the tender, it is common for the whistle relay to stick in the operated position, due to residual magnetism and a close fit between the armature and the core of the relay. An easy fix is a small piece of masking tape to assure a minimal gap between the two.
Definitely not a problem with the tender. The five whistle tenders that i have work fine with my ZW. I should have stated that in the first post. I guess I’ll just use it to power accessories till i can find a fix.
Have you looked at the whistle switch? It has four fingers that slide over four circular contacts. In the up position, the upper-left finger should touch the small upper-left contact and the lower-right finger should touch the large middle-right contact. In the down position, the lower-left finger should touch the large lower-left contact and the lower-right finger should touch the small lower-right contact. As the fingers slide down, the lower-left finger should make contact before the lower-right. All the fingers and contacts should be clean; and the fingers should make firm contact with the contacts. The fingers should be firmly riveted to the shaft of the switch.
If the fingers are not pressing firmly on the contacts, there is a trick that might tighten them up without taking the switch apart.
I will do that ASAP. Thanks for your help and suggestions!!
That did it Bob. Many Thanks!!! I usually hesitate to take transformers apart due to the old wiring but this one is a snap.
