I, too, appreciate good grammar and courtesy. My spelling is awful, but I work on it. The caps things bothers me because it is hard to read. OCCASSIONALLY I use it for empahsis
I hope Bergie locks this soon, anyway all caps has been recognized for years as shouting, if it’s hard to read text, use a larger font, not all caps.my [2c]
My graduate work deals with human cultures, conflict, norms, the analysis and management of ethnopolitical conflict, and what is called “third party intervention”. So, if you can stand it, I’ll try to shed some light on this, but I promise not to quote a single source [:D]
Culture is merely a word used to encapsulate why groups do what they do the way they do it. How’s that for a mouthful! Whether you accept it or not, this forum is a group…as in “Discussion Group”. Whenever humans and primates gather in numbers, they first “form, storm, norm, perform, and then adjourn” (if there is a formal reason for the grouping, such as in business for a project or committee). Haven’t seen many primate-led committess lately, but you get the gist…they are social beings and do communicate. I digress…
Groups come together, by choice or by direction from an authority. That is the “forming.” Shortly thereafter, when they begin to deliberate, comes the “storming” where leaders have to carve out their turf, establi***hemselves, get disparate personalities and skillsets to come together for a common purpose…usually with bruised egos and fired members who are unwilling. Those who don’t mind being led, who can set aside their own interests for a superior purpose, do well and are included in the newly formed team.
It is in the “norming” phase of group dynamics that the conveniences and conventions of behaviour are established, usually by the leader, often someone dominant and charismatic. To keep this short, early in the development of the internet and email, someone, or perhaps a powerful and influential team, adopted the conventions that improved the efficacy of faceless communications. Their informal rules quickly became the norms for all who would have dealt with this group, and the “rules” flourished from that point on.
Apparently, SHOUTING was demonstrated by using all caps.
I don’t think we all hand write in all caps so why type that way?
I hand write in caps. You wouldn’t want to try to read my SCRIPT writing (shouting intended!).
Spelling and grammer are more important to me than capital letters, etc. If I can’t read it, I can’t understand it. Might as well be written in Sanskrit!
Darrell, who paid attention in English classes, remains quiet…for now
I FULLY AGREE [}:)]
on all caps is shouting, for the spelling thing I found a plug-in for Internet Explorer
designed to correct spelling in web pages, like the reply boxes on this forum.

i could care less whether one types in caps.makes no difference to me.a few words misspelled doesn’t bother me neither.i will never tell anyone about shouting nor will i tell a person he or she is a bad speller.im smart enough to know what the person is trying to type, so why some people tell others about their misspelling is beyond me.would hate to have these same people see my layout and point out the things im doing wrong on my layout.just my 2cents.terry…
Occasional mis-spelling or incorrect grammar happens. What bothers me is when it really impacts readability. Forum shorthand falls in that same category - it’s a lot harder to read than a properly written sentence, even if that sentence has one or two mis-spellings or typos in it.
Ditto to Charlie and Jeffery. We all may mispell (Don’t even think about it) a word now and again but I give up reading some of the posts. It’s just not worth the headache.
[#ditto]
No need to post in caps.
In that case, I tell them the door is to the right.[(-D][(-D]
good evening
it just bes that way.
I like useing full text ‘caps’ because there much more pleasing to me. It’s not a form of this so-called yelling. I would like to hear if it is right or wrong from Bergie’s mouth. Until then, there is ‘nothing’ wrong with caps. It is not what you people call shouting. There are people who like to use captial lettars. Allan.
good evening
selector you just gave me a headache.
You can call it what you want, but no matter what you think it means others will think it’s rude. Think of it like wearing shoes in a Japanese man’s house. Like it or not, you are part of an online culture. You can wear a shirt that shows a bare hanging belly and burp the Star Spangled Banner, if you wish, but your not going to have many friends, even if you don’t see the harm.
Though my spelling and grammer aren’t the greatest, one of my biggest pet peaves is people who type in all lower case and people who type in all caps. Don’t know why, that’s just me.
At one time machines use to say what was typed [text to voice is not new] for the visually impaired. When someone wanted to emphasize something they typed it in capitals causing the machine to do a type of shouting. I worked security at the CNIB [Canadian National Institue for the Blind] in the 70’s and seen these in use. I am not totally sure, but I think it stems from those.
I do know that shouting, as in typing all caps, was considered poor etiquette.
So tatans it is not an ‘invented’ thing that ‘someone’ just decided to come up with.
It is a real thing that has, and does exist.
Also as far as good literary literature goes [not most of the trash out there now a days] yes you can SHOUT, and do many things and express ones self in many ways literarily. You can show singing, whispering, etc. Also showing a title or company name in all caps is a way of showing its importance. I read a lot and have seen this over and over.
I know our school system sucks from comments people make that I see online, the manner in which some people write, and spellings etc.
They actually pass kids who fail english now. At least here they do. And it shows.
Anyhow, I hope that clears things up for you.
LOL AT THIS WHOLE THREAD!
