S Scale Info

I dont think I have ever seen an S scale train. Could someone tell me where does it fit on the model train scale progression. Is it biger than HO etc.
Thanks,
Rick

S cale falls between HO and O (O27) gauges.

S-gauge is between O and HO, 1/64 scale. I think it’s the gauge used by the old American Flyer trains.

This club has exhibited in New England quite a bit:

I always spend time at the shows looking at this layout. It’s a nice modelling size, bigger than HO so you can really see what’s going on, but smaller than O-gauge so that they can still maintain reasonable curves without looking too toy-like. There is actually quite a bit of commercially available stuff for S-gauge. Our local Greenberg shows typically feature quite a few S-gauge dealers.

S scale is 1/64, track gauge .883" for standard gauge track. It is roughly 1/3 larger linearly than HO and 3/4 the size of O.

This site has the most information, with links, on what is available in S http://www.trainweb.org/crocon/sscale.html

Amercan Flyer, post WWII, is S scale running on track gauge of .875"

While it is a minority scale, it has been growing quite a bit recently and has a pretty good selection of rolling stock and structures available.

Long popular with 3 foot gauge modelers, it also has some 2 foot gauge cars and locomotives.

I personally switched from HO to O and then to S. I find it the right combination of big enough to be a delight when building and small enough to have a complete layout.

Enjoy

Paul,

If you have any photos of your layout I’d love to see them. I started with American Flyer and still maintain a small collection, which made an appearance beneath the Christmas Tree. [:)]

Long live American Flyer S Gauge!!! AF S gauge is my layout. I’ll post just a few pics to avoid boring or hoging the thread. This Sunday I’ll be posting closeups of American Flyer accesories.

S in my opinion is great, big enough to handle and small enough to have a nice layout in a “small” space. I love to talk “S”

Great photos Jim! I can almost smell the Flyer smoke.

Rick, this will give you a closeup view of some old AF S scale locomotives. This is raw footage for an old American Flyer promo film, even though it’s labelled Lionel (AF don’t get no respect). It’s pretty clever how they’ve built a circular layout on a motorized (I assume) turntable that allows a stationary camera to pace the train. There’s no audio to this, unfortunately. The snow scenes at the end are really cool.

Rare AF Footage

Enjoy.

That footage was great. I love that 336, some day I may have one. Thanks!
