I was wondering what happened to the old Canadian National tracks that ran up Saanich Pensulia from downtown Victoria. Are they still in place or torn up some time ago? I thought they would make a great run for light rapid transit. I heard the tracks were torn up and converted into a walking trail.
Pretty sure its a nature hiking/cycling trail now.
The line from the junction with the Cowichan Sub(Victoria-Lake Cowichan mainline) at the Trans-Canada highway crossing, to McKenzie Ave was in use up until 1990, north of McKenzie Ave to Patricia Bay was abandoned in 1931. The ROW north of McKenzie Ave is now the Lochside trail, part of the Pat Bay Highway, and a runway at the Victoria International Airport.
Now that it’s a bicycle trail you’ll never see rails on the Galloping Goose, Saanich Spur, and Lochside Trail again, we’re talking about the same cities that wants to put a similar trail down an active rail line(the E&N Railway).
