Sad News - Birmingham., AL

Word coming in of a fatality at Omnitrax’s relatively new Alabama & Tennessee River Rwy (ATL) earlier today (7/22/05). According to early reports a 54 year old Conductor was crushed in a close clearance while shoving into a plant near Gadsen.

He had only 4 months on the RR.

Omnitrax leased the line from CSX in February 2005.

Railroad worker dies in Ragland while directing train

A railroad worker was killed by a derailed box car while directing a train through a road crossing.

Michael Willis, 56, of Gadsden, died Friday when a box car derailed and crushed him, the St. Clair County coroner said.

Willis was at the end of a ten-car train directing the engineer through the crossing at the time of the incident. He was pronounced dead at 11:07 a.m. Friday.

Willis was an employee of the American Tennessee Railway Co. Federal job-safety officials began an investigation.
