I have been having problems with logging and re-logging onto this website from my
Macintosh at home. This started with the new software. when I log on, it won’t remember it from one page to another. I am now unable to post anything on the forums as a consequence. I log on, write the post and when I hit send it tells me I have to log on first. I try to log on and it won’t let me. I made sure that the cookies were turn on.
Everything works fine and I log on OK at work using a PC. Thoughts? - Nevin
I’m going to say it’s blocking cookies. Not being a Safari user I have no idea where you set it to allow cookies for certain sites but that’s most likey what you need to do.
I have a Mac and Firefox works well. With Safari I get no graphics, troubles with anything to do with photo’s and unless I double space in between paragraphs and such, it turns into one long paragraph.
Good possibility it is because “Accept Cookies” is set to “Never”. Go to Safari/Preferences/Security, Check the box that says either “Always”, or “Only from sites I visit”.
If you don’t have a copy of Firefox, i would highly recommend downloading it. I almost never use Safari any more. Firefox is IMO the best out there for all platforms…
Other than one time, I’ve never had any problems with this forum and Safari on my iMac. That one time I experienced the same problem as you. I cleaned out the cookie cache and the problem went away. There seemed to be a million cookies in my cache so I assumed that was the problem.
I had the same problem as you with Safari on my MacBook. I had cookies enabled as you did. I had to wipe my cookies like Seamonster and it seems to be working now. I don’t have to try to keep logging in or use Firefox. I like firefox but both me and the wife use this computer and she gets firefox and I get safari unless it’s a website that doesn’t like safari.
I do agree with the above posters that it does sound like a cookie. I had a similar problem and I too use Safari but on a PC not Mac. I contacted the Kalmbach help center and a very nice individual thought I might have what she called a ‘corrupted’ cookie. (I’ve heard of corrupted politicians but never a cookie…?.!) Anyway, she had me delete all Kalmbach cookies from the Safari browser and then re-log onto this website. It worked and I’ve never had a problem since.
I just deleted all of the cookies and then logged on again. Now it seems to be working as I am posting this from home. I use firefox at work and I agree that it is very good. I’ll try it on my home Mac and see how it works. Thanks for the advice. - Nevin
MR will not support Safari. I have been using Safari (since I use a Mac) ever since I joined the Forum years ago. When it stopped working for me I called MR’s help desk and they could care less even though I had been an active Forum contrbutor and have subscribed to MR for many many years. I was going to stop posting because of MR’s IT department’s attitude but decided the Forum was a valuable means of comunication so I down loaded Foxfire and it worked. Then for some reason Safari started working again and I am still using it now even though I cannot make separate paragraphs using Safari. I seldom post anymore because of this experience and not because I mind that they don’t support Safari but, it was the way I was treated by their help desk.
I am sorry you had that experience and I am a little confused about your comments that MR’s IT department was not helpful and not supporting Safari.
I’ve only used Safari and it works perfectly well for me so they must ‘support’ it in some fashion. Secondly, we all have bad days, but when I called them a while ago, about my issue discussed above, they were very friendly and helpful. Even to the extent of sending me follow up emails to see if my problem had been resolved. The lady I spoke to was polite, courteous, and was very helpful in fixing my problem.
As one can see I am able to make separate paragraphs using Safari. Perhaps you might want to consider looking at some of your settings to see if your paragraph formatting issue is a local problem with your computer and not a global problem with the Model Railroad forum.
I would give the IT department another try, they generally are very good. Or you may want to consider deleting all your cookies in the Safari browser and then re-logging onto this website. That has permanently fixed my problem and it also apparently has fixed Nevin’s, as he mentions in the above post.
Wayne, I tried all of the things that were mentioned in this post before I called for help. I was then told in no uncertain terms by the person I spoke with that they do not support Safari and accordingly I should get another browser. End of story.
I agree with you that I should give the MR IT people another chance based on your experiences. Perhaps we were both out of sorts that day. In any event it seems that I am now able to use paragraphs.
I’ve been using Google Chrome on both my mac at home and PC at work, and it’s given me even better performance than Firefox, both here and everywhere else. It’s worth checking out.
