Safety Always First

It seems a Man lost his Life this last Saturday in Mullen, NE when his truck was hit by a train going through the town late at night.

I know this spot, having been there, and a train goes through every 15-20 minutes… Due to this fact and that it’s a heavily used line, most trains going through do not go faster than 35 mph.

In talking with a few Locals, it seems there were several factors leading to this young mans death ( he was 26 or 27), One factor was that most people in this area have become complacant with the passing trains and apparently sometimes unconciously forget to look. A second, in this case seems to be that the man and his passengers were playing around with a group of people behind them, and finally the man was not wearing his seat belt. Officals at the scene stated that with the trains low speed and the way the train impacted, that the man would have most probably lived if he was wearing his seat belt.

So remember this when driving:

  1. never play around, pay attention to just driving.
  2. Always, wear your seat belt
  3. Never get complacant with rail line. this is particualy important tothose of us that watch trains all the time, as we could easily fall into this at our favorite crossings.

SAFETY IS OF THE FIRST IMPORTANCE IN THE DISCHARGE OF DUTY. This is usually the first sentence in the operating Book of Rules and is something we should always keep in mind.
