Operation Lifesaver has responded with timely videos to describe and point out problems and current issues. They do a pretty good job of pointing out issues with regards to highway/Railroad grade crossing safety, and other timely, rail-related issues.
In 1999 here was a serious grade crossing incident that involved AMTRAK #59 and a tractor-trailer at a crossing at Bourbonnais,Il. There were 11 deaths and some 122 injuries to the passengers on the City of New Orleans. The damage total amounted to some $14 million dollars.
The Congress and the Senate of the US, passed legislation directly related to the incident and was passed into Laws to be administered by U.S. Dept of Transportation, concerning Highway Rail grade crossing safety and violations of those issues. OLI created a video to inform the Trucking Industry of those laws. It was filmed with the help of the American Trucking Assoc, Assoc. of American Railroads, OLI of Georgia, NS RR, Georgia State DOT, and Law Enforcement agencies, as well as the Georgia Motor Trucking Assoc, and some of its member companies. Its’ title was " Your License of Your Life" . It was filmed on the NS in North Georgia.
It was amazing so see the level of cooperation that was put together between organizations that are many times found in adversarial roles; to create a video, that highlighted that area of concern to all involved: The cause and effects of violations of highway/grade crossings, what those violations could mean to drivers, and to their employer companies as well.
