I am not in to model railroads, but I could have a mind changed as a result of my visit last week to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park. It is great! I thought that I would swing by for an hour or so to view the layouts. I spent nearly six hours there. The realism is fantastic. Anyone who is interested in model railroads should put a visit to the museum high on his or her to do list.
Without hesitation, IMO, the La Mesa club features one of the best overall model RR layouts and, along with several of the other layouts there, it’s world class. I even have a life time membership to the museum. When I am in San Diego I also do a lot of SP research in their up to date library. This is one of the main reasons that I listed San Diego as a hot bed of model railroading in the latest forum on that topic. Peter Smith, Memphis
You are right about it being a great place to visit. I was invited back into the workings of the layout for a great tour and would hope everyone would visit and enjoy the layout. Actually all five layouts are amazing for sure.

I’ve been a member of the San Diego club for about 2 years, and I am continually impressed by the scenic detail that I haven’t seen yet every time I’m down there. The other thing that is impressive are the people who work throughout the museum, on all the displays - friendly, helpful and willing to share their expertise in modeling. Both the La Mesa and San Diego clubs have a kids program that are really fun and rewarding.
I would be glad to take anyone here behind the glass for a tour of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern HO layout, but it would have to be on one of my run days. I run with a guy that belongs to both the La Mesa and San Diego clubs. I think I could get him to arrange a tour of Tehachapi if you are there on the right day.

How in the world do you have 715 posts on a model railroading board if you’re not interested in them?
I’ll be there on the next weekend after this one coming up. Heading home for a little vacation. Oh, so far from Los Angeles but worth it. Always a great place to visit. I think I’m more excited to show my boys again as they are getting a little bit older and more excited. My 2 year old is going to love it.
There are many railfans (whose posts on the trains and classic trains parts of these Forums add up to their total posts) who have minimal to zero interest in model trains. Long time Trains editor David P Morgan was among them.
But it sounds to me like this fellow could be a convert!
