San Marcos TX

Yesterday it hit the mid 70s here. So I decided to mosey southward about 30 miles to see if I could finally see some SB & NB action at the same time. This spot where I was in San Marcos TX is where the former Katy & MPRR run side by side. For those that do not know know the UPRR runs SB traffic to San Antonio via the old Katy & NB from San Antonio runs via the former MPRR.

So which BBQ place did you stop at?

SP,

I take it you spend a lot of time in the Austin,Tx. area even tho you live in Utah?..Thats a loooooooooong commute buddy…Thanks for sharing

Im sorry, I looked at the WRONG resonse[banghead]

Thanks for the pics. I am from New Braunfels, so I always enjoy your pics and vids since they are almost a little slice of home, although most of the time I spent in Austin was either at Camp Mabry or 6th street (the 6th street part is when I was younger).

I really enjoyed railfanning in NB. Growing up there, I was able to see the Katy and MoPac days. I remember my excitement at hearing when the UP decided to re-hab the Katy ROW through there.

The BBQ place next to the tracks is in Saginaw TX about 200 miles from my house [:)]

Well thank U for the kudos. I have also been to NB where the former Katy & MPRR cross each other. I chose San Marcos because it was closer to home then NB this time but I will again go to that crossing in NB on another nice day especially to take video of the UPRR crossing the river on the old MPRR [:)]

It sounds like you know about the Faust St bridge being opened to foot traffic. That is a great place to get some shots of the UP (MoPac) bridge over the Guadalupe River.

Actually I do not know if it is the same sorry. The place where I was was behind someones house & the UPRR is crossing the river on the former MPRR then at grade it crosses the former Katy tracks. At that point the UPRR crossing the bridge is moving west to east & the Katy is moving north to south. If you go to myrailpix.com then the Texas April 2007 gallery you will see pix from where I am talking about [:)]

I didn’t include the quotes since that is getting a little long, but I know what you are talking about now. You meant where the MoPac crosses over the Comal River right by the diamond. That is a nice spot. I spent many a days at that diamond as a kid. Using the former MoPac as a reference, the tower sat at the NW “quadrant” of the diamond. The Katy depot was where the small yard is where the spur cuts off to the ADM mill (between the diamond and the through truss bridge near Landa Park). Seguin Ave dead ends at this yard. The foundation and some floor tiles used to be visible, but I am sure that is all gone by now.

Yes that is it I think. There is a depot on the old MPRR that has a steam engine on display. There is also a transfer track between the 2 former RRs there. The tower was gone when I was there last year. No yard or evidence of a yard beyond the train station there. The UPRR had brought in some 5 engines for a display for the train show they were having the day I was there. [:)]

I was a member at the museum there once upon a time. The tower and depot I am talking about is the old Katy depot. The tower burned down many years ago. Like I said, if you follow Seguin Ave to where it dead ends, you will find the spot. You may also want to talk to the guys at the museum on a day that they are open and they will be able to help you with this. There is definately a lot of rich railroading history in NB.

Probably in April when the next train probably is I will do that[:)]

Try the BBQ place in Kyle in the old depot. Not bad.
