sand or crusher dust for yards

[:-^]

Suggestions needed.

I have always been under the impression that when I got to the point of ballasting my yards that I would use screened sand or crusher dust. However while looking for a suitable (inexpensive) product, I find that there are very many small metal fragments in any of the samples that I have examined. Too many to successfully use a magnet to get rid of them. I would be doing this until next Christmas and that is out of the question. So I feel like any of the products available in bulk would have this same problem, I was wondering about the Bagged playground or sandbox sand that the Big Box Stores have would be any different. ??? Would they have possibly been cleaned of these shrags ?? I sure would hope so if you are putting your kids into it…

I have two yard areas that are about 2 feet wide by 17 feet long, Any suggestions or comments. Any will be gratefully accepted and considered.

May the Rails never be Silent.

Try Play Sand. I find it free of impurities. It can be used as a base and final scenery product used later or the sand itself can be stained w/ various washes. This has been sucessfully done in many of the yards for my club layout. Does save on the use of the pricey ballast.

Thanks Bob, That is what I will try. I thought that might be the answer.
