Would the Walthers sandhouse be appropriate for a layout set in 1975?
i imagine there would still have been a few of them around then but, by that time, everywhere i worked got dry sand in company material covered hoppers or sand cars converted from old surplus tenders.
this was especially true where a large terminal had more than one locomotive service facility like you might find at satellite and industrial switching yards while the sand drying facility was located at the main engine terminal.
. we would spot the car of sand at the end of a designated stub track and connect the compressed air and sand lines up to it to blow the sand up into the bins above the service tracks.
we usually took the knuckle and pin out of the coupler so nobody could tie on to the car and move it while the lines were connected. a blue flag and switch lock provided extra protection.
i’m sure some other guys can tell you about facilities like this they might have seen or been around during the era you are modeling.
it is a nice looking little structure and would look good on a layout. you could model it even if it was no longer being used.

Thanks for the info. That’s what I figured someone would say. Started building my layout set in the transition era, but because I’m more familiar with the early 70’s decided to update. So it looks like some of my engine terminal will have to get an update. Thanks again for the info!
