Sant Fe Signal Bridge at DT

Here’s a shot to share… a Metrolink being pushed at DT Jct. last Sunday. While I have heard nothing about this signal bridge being in jeopardy, one can only wonder how much longer it will survive. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=238322&nseq=0

Thank you very much for this photo of a train at DT Junction in the Los Angeles area of southern California on the former ATSF San Bernardino Subdivision (double track mainline) .

For those who do not know DT Junction is located just southeast of Los Angeles and north of Santa Fe Springs. You can find DT Junction near where the 605 Freeway meets Slauson Avenue just north of Santa Fe Springs. DT JCT is located nearest where Rivera Road almost touches Slauson Ave.

Thanks again Charles.

“Bombardier Boogie-Woogie” with apologies to Mondrian. The paint and windows on the coaches remind me of jazz charts and Edward Hopper’s (not a freight car you knuckleheads) dark staring windows. The target signals aren’t telling anything either. Were they lit?

I think it’s just the angle. Those signals are always lit.

From what I remember about those bridges, and the searchlight signals, when I lived in Flagstaff in the early 80s, those searchlight signals have polarizers on them. You have to look directly at them to see the light from them.

The two-track signal bridge will probably survive until some future triple-tracking necessitates a replacement.

The name “DT Junction” is a misnomer of sorts, and stems from the days where double-track met single-track at the location. Because Southern Pacific crossed the Santa Fe there, the old name stuck and continues to this day. I believe it was in the early 1970’s when the single-track section was supplanted by double-track.

Nice find. Ever since the BNSF merger they have started a mass extinction of Santa Fe’s signal bridges probably because of maintenance costs or visibility problems.
