I would like to build a model of the Santa Fe tandem compound 2-10-2 loco number 1654 built in 1903. I understand there is a scale drawing in a book “The steam locomotives of the Santa Fe”, but it is out of print and I haven’t been able to find it in a library or on Amazon. If anyone could scan the drawing and e-mail it to me I would be very grateful…
Many thanks

I have Frank Ellington’s book but there is no photo or drawing of 1654 in it. There is a photo of 1654 in E.D Worley’s “Iron Horses of the Santa Fe Trail”.
Ellington does cover the tandem compound 2-10-2s in great detail on pages 95 to 101. There are drawings of locos 917, 929 and 985 and photos of 1630, 1698 and 1701.
All these locomotives are generally similar and it isn’t clear which drawing would apply best to 1654.
Other than having a Baldwin photo taken of it, did 1654 have any special distinction?

Thank you very much for replying to this. I picked on 1654 simply because I had found a photograph of it and it had inside valve gear. I would ideally like to model a 2-10-2 with inside valve gear, so if there is a drawing with inside gear, that would be great.
Many thanks
Matthew
Greetings,
I hope you don’t mind me contacting you directly. I am very grateful to you for your help on my 2 enquiries on the Model Railroader Forum (I have been able to sort out my drawings of the De Glehn Atlantic with the dimensions you gave and construction is now under way).
I would like, if possible, to get a copy of the information from Frank Ellington’s book on the Santa Fe 2-10-2 compounds and I will be in New York visiting a relative in September. I would be happy to pay for the cost of photocopying and postage to me in New York or scanning and sending to me by e-mail would be excellent too.
Many thanks again,
Matthew Cadbury
