The warbonnet PA’s have definitely not been forgotten, just long gone. I would definitely consider the U28CG’s and U30CG’s to be almost forgotten but definitely different.
Other oddballs with warbonnets would be the Erie-built trio (ATSF 90) , the DL109 (ATSF 50) and M190 (the articulated motor car)
Love that ALCO PA-1. It would have been great if it had just came out of the paint shop with a fresh coat of paint.

That’s why we need to enjoy the warbonnets while we can.
They haven’t been totally forgotten… I think lots of railfans will always remember the warbonnets.

Willy, one way that livery is being remembered is by being reproduced on various models. People who may not be train enthusiasts and therefore, not have any books with the pictures, can see them on exhibition layouts at model railway shows.
Then there is the heritage fleet - if there is any older locos with the warbonnet livery preserved?

1- SSB1200 is out there still (not preserved) but with the funky yellowbonnet on an EMD switch engine long hood (San Berdoo had conniptions trying to put a bonnet on a switch engine, the old C&O style yellow ends looked better…

The way things are going on the railroads everywhere it was a blessing that Santa Fe brought back the warbonnet again before being bought up / merged whatever, by BN.
Anybody know where the U28CGs at the link were photographed?
It looks a bit like San Bernadino, but I 've been told they didn’t run to LA.
They look strange with black trucks and tanks. The only red warbonnet units with a conventional cab, I think!

The consist suggests that the train is probably the “Chief” since there is a full-length dome and no high-level coaches. San Bernardino is a good guess. The U28CG’s and U30CG’s were initially assigned to the “Texas Chief” and later wound up on 23-24, the remnants of the “Grand Canyon”. I don’t think that the “Chief” was a regular assignment.
The CLF and CLP classes in Australia would look great with a warbonnet. A double-ended warbonnet on the broad gauge would be a bit extreme, though.

I kew someone would bring up the U30CG, I was about to myself. Last week when my internet worked fine I went on a spree looking for photos of these engines. go to www.railpictures.net and search U30CG, there is some nice photos.
PS. Didn’t SF rebuild a E unit and put like a doggish looking front on it? What was that called? Got any pictures on hand?

It looks to me that the U28CG picture was taken in Barstow.They were also used for a short time on the San Diegans.Each time I saw them on that train, they had two units on a three car train.
I believe ATSF had one or two E8 units rebuilt from EA’a and painted in the red and silver warbonnet scheme?
really had to put my thinking cap on to figure out what train was being pulled by the u28cg units at San Bernardino and could only come up with the SAN FRANCISCO CHIEF in late June or early July as this was the only time that train would be their in daylight. The CHIEF was already a mainstay of the F units as was the SUPER CHIEF and EL CAPITAN. The TEXAS CHIEF was in the hands of the U30CG units and the U28 units operated briefly in the SAN FRANCISCO CHIEF before they were switched to freight service.
