Can someone point me in the right direction for some actual pictures of Sante Fe GP-60 engines? I’d like to know how to weather my GP-60 Life-Life Proto 2000 engine in N scale, #4028.
You will find a roster and links to photos here: http://www.trainpix.com/ATSF/ROSTER.HTM
Click on the locomotive model and you’ll get a listing with links to each locomotive’s photo.
BTW, if your model has the # 4028 on the cab, it’s a GP60.
I would recommend George Elwood’s Fallen Flag site at http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ , the Don Ross site at http://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/ , or pay a visit to QStation at http://www.qstation.org/ for all kinds of Santa Fe information.
Santa Fe owned 11 GP38-2s, all ex-TP&W diesels acquired when Santa Fe merged that road in 1984.
I was hoping that you’d pipe up! Awesome!
BTW, you know your engines. I was looking at photos of GP-38s, GP-38-2s, GP-39s, and GP-40s, and the dynamic brakes looked different on my model than all the ones from the -38,-39, and -40s. It was more flat and sticking out, rather than slanting up from the body. It also has three radiator fans at the rear of the engine.
BTW, can someone change the title to “Looking for GP-60 pictures” instead?
Yes…edit the subject line in your original post, as I did here. And if you use the link I responded with, you’ll find GP60 photos there, too.
Hello gatrhumpy and welcome to the MR forums.
The Santa Fe had 10 GP40Xs nbrd 3800 to 3809. The most distinctive feature about them were the flared radiators. If you would like to research more of the GPs that the Santa Fe had, you should look for a copy of Kevin EuDaly’s book “Santa Fe 1992 Annual” by Hyrail Productions. It lists all of the GPs and SDs the Santa Fe had on its roster at that time. The book is out of print, but you can find a copy at a train show or on auction sites.
Take care,
Russell
There is a train show coming up in May here in Jacksonville. I may have to look into that. Thanks!
Gator,
The loco you are inquiring about is from the second order of GP-60’s the Santa Fe ordered. This had the later boxy dynamic brake hatch like yours. When these locomotives were first delivered they were quite clean and actually kept that way for awhile. An excellent resource for quality color pictures is The Santa Fe Diesel Book 2 by Dr. Cinthia Priest. This is out of print also, but can still be found at book sellers in shows. In the GP-60 section there are 12 color photos along with explanations of the equipment of each that makes them unique. There is a good side shot of a rather dirty #4028. Keep in mind all locos get dirty. The Santa Fe used to wash theirs fairly regularly so they didn’t stay dirty long.
Good Hunting, Mikie
Ugghhh. If I could find that book, that would be awesome. Maybe I’ll try eBay.
Thanks man!
