A few years ago I heard that Canadian Pacific and Canadian National were going to share a rail line through Saskatoon. Is there any truth to what I heard? I think it was Canadian Pacific’s line in Saskatoon that was going to be shared as there wasn’t much rail traffic on it for several years other than one frieght to and from Edmonton, wheat runs and to the two potash mines just west of town. Looking forward to any information I can get.
CP has been spending millions of dollars on its’ “Northern Main Line” project between Winnipeg and Edmonton, so the line has a bright future. It needs to be ready when the worlds largest mining company, BHP Billiton, eventually opens their new potash mine at Jansen, east of Lanigan, once the world price rises to the appropriate level.

Wouldn’t it be more practical for CP to extend a line from Moose Jaw to 'toon town rather than millions on a new main line from Winnipeg? It’s 450 miles from WPG to S’toon, and 130 miles from Moose Jaw to S’toon, and the main line is already there to Winnipeg, and Moose Jaw is divisional point for the heavy haul division, makes sense to me and there is a new potash plant going up near Moose Jaw.
Actually Saskatoon is connected to the main line at Regina via the Lanigan Sub. Lanigan being just east of Saskatoon. There is already so much business on the main line that they want to move potash from the mines located in northern Saskatchewan west over to Edmonton(Wetaskiwin) and then bring it down to Calgary. From there it can be sent to the coast either at Vancouver or Portland, OR.
