Satellite Maps

I’ve had fun with the Terra Server site tracing the rail lines for the C&O

It helps to know the longitude and latitude or a nearby city or town I learned of this thru David Barrows when I visited his Cat Mountain layout.

He had photos showing the real track layout taped to the layout area he modeled

Here’s a link to The Photo of Thurmond http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=10&Z=17&X=2464&Y=21004&W=1&qs=|Minden|west+virginia|

Have you ever used this feature , or one like it for researching you favorite railroad ?

I used Google Earth and Google Maps images (seems to have better resolution than Google Earth in some cases) to research the track plan in Presidio Texas for my layout. I just wanted to get a rough idea on how to design the track plan for the Presidio end of my layout. It is also a great reference for placing structures such as the depot and water tower.

I like to use www.local.live.com . The imaging is fantastic! (Close the little welcome window on the left)

I used Terra Server to follow the abandoned D&H trackage from Nineveh NY south to Starrucca Viaduct once. The track has been gone for years but it was easy to follow the tree lines. Cool !!!

Mark.

I’ve used Terraserver quite a bit in the planning of my Palouse layout. It’s a great resource. It’s also fun to just follow other old rail lines I’m not modeling.

If you want your layout to be in a 1990s style try global explorer. Global explorer has 1994 satellite maps. Does anyone know any other Satellite Maps which has the early 1990s photography.
