Looks like Senior Editor Matt Van Hattem will join me and Art Director Tom Danneman at Rochelle for a bit of train watching, the chance to meet some of you guys, and an opportunity for us to share some possible design tweaks to the magazine. We’d appreciate your stopping by and giving us some feedback. It’ll be nice to shake some hands. Hope to see you there!
One of your fellow staffers knows enough to head east after a great time in Rochelle. I might get back from the Saturday festivities in Michigan in time to hit Elmhurst after sunset. (But then again, maybe not–might have a tired family on my hands, too.)
Well that stinks I am going down with the family on Thursday of next week. On our way to South Carolina. Never miss a chance to stop in Rochelle. Sorry I cant make it there on Saturday.
Looks like we’ll be there 9ish to about 1:30 or so. As for Spencer, it may be a while. I managed a trip last month, did my qualifying run for the year with the N&W GP9 (Ms. 1925’s feeling bad–tubes are a bit corroded), and visited the guys while NS Chairman Wick Moorman did the honors with the bubbly on the rebuilt FP7 6133. Have a great weekend, everybody! Jim
Many thanks to Jim, Matt and Tom from Trains magazine for giving us a “sneak peak” at what we may see on Trains magazine cover in the future and for the Trains pin and some very spirited and interesting conversation at Rochelle today (by the way I am going to eventually take Jim up on his invitation when I am in Milwaukee). It was also very nice to meet Brian (aka blhanel) all the way from Cedar Rapids for some additional conversation. If Brian posts the picture he took of me and the Trains guys, I hope it does not screw up the web page too much and that you others don’t laugh so much you lose your cookies or lunch. It was a pretty busy day at Rochelle and a good time was had by all.
…Checked the web cam for Rochelle yesterday {Saturday}, but saw almost no one in the camera’s view…Did see lots of trains though…Seems everytime I turned to it there was a train passing.
Saw a coal train sitting across the diamonds for quite a while…Thought that was a bit unusual.
Don’t mind if I do!
From L-R, Tom, Jim (eolafan), and Jim Wrinn.
And a few shots of the action:
That last one was all tankers except for the first and last cars (obviously buffer cars)- we were speculating that we were watching a unit ethanol train, maybe?
And, as a bonus, on my way home I caught the train in the first picture again as it approached Cedar Rapids near Bertram…
All in all, a very enjoyable day! It was a pleasure to meet you all.
Shot are great as usual. Last one is really nice. Man, how do you always find the great lighting AND the train! I always get one or the other! [banghead]
Brian, I think your speculation about the train being unit ethanol (empties, if westbound) is probably on the mark. Had I been able to be there with you all, I would have been able to tell you with a reasonable amount of certainty.
Jim (Eolafan) is one of the people I’m most looking forward to meeting in person someday (that is, among those I haven’t already met). Can’t do it tomorrow, as we have a wedding to attend. But one of these days…
