Not my petition, but I signed it and thought I should try to get the word out. Sign the petition for the ex C&O SD40, CSX 4617 , to be donated upon retirement.

i signed it. SD40s are cool machines. and you just dont see too many of them these days
I’ve signed it. No one really knows how good something is until it’s gone, so let us never let it be gone.
too true!
Id rather see the TRAINS magazine locomotive fo the century or what not Geep saved. It was Chessie also. That is if it hasnt been already.
I believe that that locomotive (originally B&O GP38 3802, later CSXT 2002) has been earmarked for the B&O Museum, if it isn’t there already.
As for saving an SD40, the question becomes, why? Is that a particularly significant model? When they were being built, more SD45s were being sold than SD40s. The SD40-2 was a more popular locomotive, and easier to take care of than the SD40s. It’s probably not too early to start thinking about saving one of those.
How dont you see them too often these days?
I signed the petition because even though SD40s may not seem rare now, with the rapid advances in new locomotive design they may quickly become relics of the past and they do represent an important period of time in the history of American railroads that should be preserved.
Your darned right I signed the petition! I am all for saving history for our children.
In all honesty, you dont see them much at all anymore. Straight SD40s are a thing of the past. UP retired theres in the late 80s! CN just recently retired them about a year ago, BNSF only has a few left also.

Signed it. Why not, better to start early, then when it is too late.
I signed it. I think this engine needs to be saved, since it appears to be the only unit left in the Chessie paint scheme. I mean, if it goes, the Chessie kind of goes with it. If no other units are painted in Chessie colors, how will anyone know the Chessie even existed? (that’s kind of what happened to all of the Genesis locomotives in Phase III) It needs to be saved for future generations to see.
An SD40 isn’t as odd or un-successful as some units that have been preserved. Out in the west an SDP40F (the Amtrak rail-spreaders) has been restored, and I think it is even still operational.
