God I hope somebody with money or some group can save this
caboose if it is indeed awaiting the scrapper’s torch! It sure
looks like it’s in good enough shape for restoration.
If I had the dough I would! I just got an e-mail from a rep of the
BRHS and he said they have somebody working on it right now.
Whew - that was a close one…
Hopefully somebody will save it! It’s quite remarkable that it’s still in it’s original CB&Q paint. It’s always sad to see any piece of railroad equipment meet the scrapper’s torch, but I can’t get over the fact that there are scrapyards that will actually cut up perfectly good cabooses. Unlike other rolling stock, cabooses are in demand from many people and are used to serve many purposes and there is a large market for them outside of railfans, railroad museums, etc.
I travel from Minneapolis to St. Cloud every weekend. I have seen this caboose several times parked at the scrap yard. They have been cutting up BN boxcars that apparently were part of a derail. They have a large quantity of wheel/axle (s) stacked in their yard also.
If I were 20 years younger, I would try to buy it but too old now for big projects. It looks like it is in pretty good shape from the road.
