I am currwntly implementing this method on MP54’s and the new Walthers Metroliners. Instead of having every car powered, I will get two Metroliners one upfront and at the end and I will buy about 3 to 5 more Amfleet coaches and install pantographs on them. In the future I will power them or simply buy all powered ones. The same concept applies with the MP54s.

Hmmm - Difference between Budd Metroliner and Amfleet coaches

Metroliner cab cars: De-powered. Slimline windows. Outboard bearing trucks. Cab on one end. Doors either end. Poor riding from truck hunting.

Metroliner Amfleet I cars: Structurally different from Metroliner (hence cheaper and lighter). Slimline windows. Inboard beating trucks. Vestibules on both ends. A number of interior configurations:

AmCoach (84-seat and 72-seat variations), AmCafe, AmDiner, Custom Class, Business Class. Poor riding from lightweight construction.

How close do the Metroliner and Amfleet I shells match?
