Let me set this up for you, There’s a park along the river in town, there is also what I thought to be park rails running through it. You see we have a Rail trolley that the park will pull out from time to time and uses these rails. These rails do go across very bad spots, even at one point to go right down the middle of a road and connect to the old yard to the south, and the crossings that are on it are all exempt.
Now for what Shocked me, i was driving down the expressway that parrellel’s the park and saw 2 UP loco’s pulling a single boxcar along this line, at one point before the road and rail diverge, the lights of the lead loco were shining right in my face. in all my life, even when SOO was in town, i do not recall ever seeing a freight line run on those rails.
Just thought I’d share my strange sighting today.
PS. didn’t have the camera with me, nor could i just pull over and take a picture either. Sorry for that [:(]
You don’t mention the “disgusting” town where you live and no one else wants to, but it sounds a little like Rockford. UP crews have to make sure the trolley is “put away” before using the line. Never having seen this, I don’t know what industries are there–but something must still be giving the UP the business!
Yes it’s Rockford, and it was Sinnissippi Park and i don’t know why they’d be using it, since the line runs through downtown and is just a siding, starts that the switch south of walnut and ends at windsor road, so unless they’re servicing a bussiness in Loves park, I have no clue why they’d go that way.
If you do a google maps search on 1401 N. Second Street, Rockford, Il and zoom in all the way, you’ll see the dark brown line that is nthe tracks.
[wow] very cool I don’t think I have ever seen something like that in my area well execpt the ferodort malt line which I see almost everyday and they use a CP rail engine. and I think it is a pretty cool thing to see nice and close now that they tore down one of the buildings.
