Scanner Antennas

After some research, I just purchased a Uniden BC92XLT scanner for railfanning purposes. But one of the online sources said that the “rubber duckie” antenna was worthless. Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement antenna and where I might purchase one online?

Take a read through this thread for a few ideas.

You really need two antennas. One antenna is for your car, and I use the Max-Rad antenna which is tuned to the 160 - 161 MHz carrier frequency bands. It does a good job of pulling in distant transmissions, and it is available from Railcom in Germantown, TN. The other antenna is for portable use, and here I use a Radio Shack collapsible antenna which I adjust to 18 to 19 inches. It does a better job of pulling in transmissions than the “rubber duckie” antenna which comes with the scanner. I would like to find a collapsible antenna that can be tuned to the 160 to 161 MHz carrier frequency bands.
