I am beginning to use my two new scanners. One for photos and a dedicated slide scanner. I was wondering what resolution people are using for their archiving? How about for general sharing?

When I scan my photo’s I usually save them at high resolution. Here is one that I scanned
Use the highest resolution available. You can always modify down, but never up.
If you’re just going to post on the net, 72 dpi is all you need. Then just adjust the target size to however big you want it to be on the screen. If you think you will print them on your own printer, then go with whatever that printer is capable of… Most normal printers will only do about 350 dpi. If you think you might have some printed on professional equipment, then go for as big a scans as you’re willing to have to store. Save in JPEG for the web size, with moderate amounts of compression. Save in JPEG for home printing, with little to no compression. Save in PIC or some other low compression file type, for the pro printing version.
