Scary news story

Saw this on Channel 4’s (Columbus, OH) website this morning. Just glad it had a good outcome and that the driver is no longer driving a school bus.

The biggest fear for all operation’s employees are school buses and tanker trucks, obviously.

“School Bus Near Miss” - 1 min. 45 sec. news clip, after a 15 sec. commercial. Includes an interesting and comprehensive demonstration of all the steps a bus driver has to do when approaching a railroad crossing.

Zanesville School District bus in front of an Ohio Central System train - less than 200 ft., apparently, according to the 5 teen-age passengers on board. What’s really interesting is that the train crew or railroad called and reported it to the school district before the bus even got back from that run !

Thanks for sharing - definitely out of the ordinary.

Good it was a near miss.

Sometimes, it isn’t a near miss, as happened almost 11 years ago in Tennessee, documented in this NTSB report. As it turned out, in the Tennessee incident, there were on-bus surveillance tapes that showed the driver going through the particular grade crossing without making the required stop on several days before the fatal accident. Good that there are repercussions for the driver.

Thank God the train crew could call the school district, not 9-1-1.

I love how, “Remorseful,” people are when it becomes public knowledge that they screwed up big time. At least, nobody had to cry at a funeral.

Referencing what Chuch noted. The link above is to a copy of the NTSB Remort as well, it is sited on “Trainorders.com”.

I was living in Ga at the time of the incident in Mar of 2000. and attended a Ga OLI Meeting shortly after the Tennga. Ga crash happened. The school bus operators had ignored her instructions about actions to take on the crossing approx. 8 times. The crossing itself was a single lane road crossing at a diagonal to track that was curving; with limited visibility to the drivers right side. Some vegetation was a vision limiting factor for the driver and crew. The net result was two young children killed and possibly six(?) others seriously injured, one was a daughter to the driver.

THe NTSB exhonorated the CSX Crew and placed the blame on the Bus Driver.
