Here’s a few.
Take a trip to local craft shops, like Michaels or A.C. Moore. (www.michaels.com, www.acmoore.com) They have plaster cloth, Envirotex, Modge-Podge, balsa wood strips, paints, etc. A.C. Moore generally has a coupon good for 40% off one single item. (It’s kind of hidden in the “Store Locator” section of their web site.) That’s not much on a cheap container of craft paint, but it will save you a few dollars on plaster cloth or Envirotex.
I think loather and MisterBeasley covered most of them.
Something to think about, is making your own scenery. Its low money, somewhat easy to do, and nothing is more realistic then the real thing.
To make a soil effect under some shrubs on my n scale, i took some dead leaves from the yard, took some elmers glue, and well, thats it.
I put small dabs of glue, and with that, took about two 1/4 inch pieces of dead leaves, and just simply over-lapped them until i was happy with tone.
I also did this on a rolling hill on my layout. It did take some time to complete, but the end result was, i like to think, better than the end result with a simple 1 tone brown paint.
Just something to think about.
