Ok so I have been in the hobby for a few years (12). One thing I have noticed is the large selection of adhesives for scenery products these days.
Woodland Scenics “Scenic Cement”
Timberline Scenery “TSA”
Ts Custom Trees “Scenic Adhesive”
Scenics Express “Matte Medium”
What are the differences and what do you preffer? And I hear matte medium is a different formula than the others? Has anyong used it and if so do you like it?
Athearn, Proto, BLI, PCM. Blue Line, Atlas or Kato.
I am sure you get the idea. For my self I will with stick (there a pun) with good old Elmer’s mixed 50% glue and 50% water and a drop of dish soap. For making super trees, cheap hair spray.
Since most of these manufacturers do not list what really is in the contents, it is anyone’s guess. From what I have experienced, they all seem to be some diluted form of Matte Medium. Woodland Scenics ‘Scenic Cement’ appears to be Matte Medium diluted - 1 part Matte Medium, 2 parts water. I usually buy Scenic Cement(16 oz) at the local Hobby Lobby using the 40%or 50% off coupon. I can buy Matte Medium(8 oz) with the same coupon - The cost is about the same(bottle to bottle), but I get about 50% more product(24 oz) for ballasting/scenery. Mixing Matte Meduim 50/50 with water gives me a thicker mixture that is handy when doing sides of hills and coarse clump material. They all dry ‘dead flat’…
I have employed diluted matte medium in place of virtually all other adhesives for many, many years and found it to be far more universally applicable than any of the other hobby “glues”. The only area in which it doesn’t do well is in situations where the hobbyist wants an instantaneous bond, where a product like one of the super glues better fits the bill.
I would also suggest purchasing your matte medium from a local art supply, or arts & crafts store, where you should get a much better value.
