Scenic Express Tree material?

I recently saw the scenic express super tree tree material. It looks like great stuff but it is very expensive. I swear that I’ve seen the plant they are using growing in the wild somewhere. If anyone knows what plant it is I’d love to know. Our club has the whole layout to forest so we need a lot. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just bought some of their Dead Fall foliage material for my mr. It doesn’t hold the embedded foam nearly as well as Woodland Scenics–ended up with something that looks like a dirty spiderweb–and it cost more.

No, you haven’t seen this plant growing in the wild (I’m not going to go into a long explanation here as to the ID but take my word for it). However, do yourself a favor and purchase a box of them. I made over 400 trees from the box I bought and will put them up against just about anybody elses when it comes to looking realistic. Overall, the product is not very expensive, considering that each tree armature actually runs you about twenty cents when purchasing the big box.

Thank you for your responses. CNJ831 I wish you would go into the explaination. Specifically if you have the latin name for this plant I would be most appreciative. I may very well have been mistaken as to the identity of the plants as I am certainly no botanist. I don’t even know what a petunia looks like. If you could provide a name for this plant that would be sufficient. Thank you again for your response.

I believe that according to Scenic Express instructions, the plant is a European variety of moss. I think that they are intentionally vague on the point. I have made quite a few of these trees. I must say that this product is excellent and you get great looking trees with relatively little effort. I’m sure the cost per tree is pretty low. The starter kit is a great deal by the way…Also check out their method for planting trees. Dribble superglue on the trunk, zap it with accelerator and viola, planted tree. Quick, easy and no more little piles of plaster from drilling holes. Planted half my layout in a few hours this way.

My two cents,

Good stuff. Saw a helpful hint in MR that would seem to solve the biggest problem with this product. The " trunks" tend to have a bow in them , to overcome this, push a thin piece of wire up thru the trunk. not a problem because the center is soft. S.E. suggests to attach a weight to the top of the tree as it hangs from the trunk to dry. Didn’t really work for me. Jerry

The Super Tree material is claimed to be of Scandinavian origin. As far as I know, it is not native to North America. I can find the scientific name, if you reallly need to know. It’s been identified on one or two discussion groups that I belong to. The consensus among those people was that it wasn’t available from suppliers in the US.
