Schedules for Roanoke passenger service released

Fascinating. The improvements aren’t even in place yet, but we somehow know the train must originate at exactly 6:19 AM. From a marketing standpoint, wouldn’t 6:15 or 6:20 make more sense?

Astonishing how some individuals frame their comments in ways that violate the rules of this site and in so doing cast reflections solely upon their character.

this is basically the extension of the existing Lynchburg train, even keeping the same timetable

however long it takes to build, norfolk southern has been true
to its word about every project it has done with states. once
they hammer out the metrics, they stick to it – and often get
the work done sooner than scheduled. like union pacific in
california, they honor their commitments and allow the plant
to function in service of the schedule. reliability makes these
trains attractive and ns has been notable in “coming through”
when it makes a deal to do so. my, how i wish we could get
that kind of commitment and reliability on the chicago line
between englewood and toledo…

From tiny acorns do mighty oaks grow.

Mr Hayes .oh .please Barry Sotero?..just go and have a nice quiet dinner with Orly Tazis and Donald Trump.

But tell me what does this have to do with passenger service in Roanoke.?

This is slightly off topic.
But anyone out there explain to me what Michael King or a ‘modern’ Barry Sotero of wherever ? has to do with this news story ? !

I think that it would be nice to use the ex Virginian station, rather than near the Link Mueseum.

Unfortunately, with that schedule it doesn’t look like this will be a “new” train but simply an extension of the existing Lynchburg train to Roanoke.

Austin, some wine to go with your cheese?

3 years to start up? I bet it wouldn’t take the Chinese 3 years to get it done, especially since its ONLY an extension from lynchberg and the right of way is in place. The Chinese could probably build it from scratch in less time. What wrong with OUR country?
AND only one train arriving at 10PM? I guess the new NEW U.S. attitude is, Its better than nothing.

Don’t know if its possible, but would love to have that train stop at the old station ,which is now the Link Museum. My family used to ride 1&2 to from New York to Roanoke by way of Hagerstown MD. When coming into Roanoke, N&W would have your luggage transferred over to the Hotel Roanoke. Breakfast in the Diner/Lounge always featured Virginia Ham ,eggs and baking powder biscuits. Little things like that made service so seamless in those days.

The new train closely corresponds to the old schedule of the “Birmingham Special” between Roanoke and Washington in the 1950’s and 60’s.

“Dr. Martin Luther King, jr.”? To whom does that refer? Oh, Michael King, before he took on the alias, no? Shades of the modern Barry Sotero of Kenya and Indonesia.

I’m surprised the Goose didn’t flatuate negativity about this new service.

It seems to me that there should be direct service between Norfolk and Roanoke with a provision to change trains at Lynchburg and Petersburg for points north or south. NS headquarters are in Norfolk but they do have offices in Roanoke and Atlanta.

Is this going to actually an extension of an existing train?

Why not use the former N&W station ? Yes, aware now the
Link Museum ( and have visited) but how appropriate to
have this great station (design by Raymond Lowrey ?) serving
the train. Projected times are ???s and why this project will
take THREE years is amazing.
