Scottish tourist railroads or rail museums

My Family is planning a summer vacation to Scotland. We would like to visit a tourist railroad or Rail history museum. We will be staying in Edinburgh for about one week, so we will not have a whole lot of time. Do any of you know of anything in the Edinburgh area that would make a family of rail fans happy? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

One of the leading preserved railways in Scotland, The Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, is just outside Edinburgh. Their website is www.srps.org.uk/railway/ It’s situated alongside the Forth Estuary and has a large collection of locos and rolling stock including several working steam and diesel locos. Some of the older items are housed in a museum building which also houses a lot of smaller artefacts.

If you’ve got time you can also pop over to Glasgow (fast trains take 40 minutes from Edinbuirgh and run every 20 minutes) and visit Glasgow Transport Museum http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=7 which has several railway locos on display.

Have a good vacation!

Plus, if you are in the Edinburgh area I think a must-see is the Forth Bridge. For something completed in 1890 it’s an amazing structure. In fact it’d be an amazing structure even if built today.
