They have light rail in L.A., too, so there is probably more to dodge than there is in Brooklyn.

I am told that the name “railriders” is used to refer to the members of a sailing crew the hang off of the high side rail when the boat is running across the wind.

VERY interesting! As both a baseball and railfan, I appreciate that bit of trivia. Although not a Dodgers fan, I had wondered the origin of their nickname.

Don’t forget the Altoona Curve team.

THe RailRiders are not the first team to be named after a rail system. The Brooklyn Dodgers were named after Brooklynites who dodged the trolley cars. Brooklyn, NY had an extensive network of trolley lines. Downtown Brooklyn is where many of the lines converged. Hence when crossing a street you had to be aware of the presence of the trolley cars and doge them if necessary to avoid being hit. They named their team the Dodgers.

THe dodgers moved to L.A. and probably no one knows how they got their name.

Great. A tresspassing porcupine, about to get plastered by a trolley. To funny.

Thank you Dr. Iacono. Being a baseball fan I often wondered how that name came about, and now I know.

The Gary (IN) Railcats, within site of the US Steel Gary Works, is another rail-themed minor league baseball team.

I think it is a great name for the team!

Don’t forget that the area has a rich railroad history, and is home to Steamtown - a very popular National Park.

Being a former E-L employee I think they should have named them the " Lackawanna Lucky’s " … gray background, maroon border and yellow trim on the sleeves and collar !! How about that ?

And then there were the Herington, Kansas High School Railers, Herington being a former longtime Rock Island terminal, later and now a UP terminal.
