Seeing I’m imprisoned to my work bench, I custom build alot of things. Being a steel mill modeler, custom building equipment is nothing new. I’ve built a kress hot metal carrier already, it came out so well I decided to build another version of another carrier from the kress family.
I had to start out building the scrap box ,this being the hardest to build anyway. The carrier its self is from about the 70’s, judgeing from the drawing I have. Should be a fun build, looking forward to the finnished product .
I’ll paint this model when completed flat white with decals. The cab is off set, right on top of the engine,so I’ll have to scratch build the cab also.
Below are four pictures of both the kress carrier and three pictures of the scrap box.
It’s built out of styrene stock and a old toy cover, two bic pens and some sheet styrene to be exact. Normaly I scratch build using just about anything laying around, this scrap box fits that category.
As soon as I can get my mitts on another norscot scraper the carrier will have start being built. I have two Cat scrapers that I’ve super detailed and I really don’t want to trash them, building this kress model.
I worked on most all the styrene parts for the back half of the carrier today. The receiver arms, lifting arms and the beams for the frame. Scratch built the kress cab, didn’t turn out as I would have liked it…so it got its self scratched from the plan. I’ll have to build a new cab and figure out just how all this will go together.
The receiver arms coming off the scraper yoke…CA glue won’t stick. I’ll have to find a new source for that. Other than that, everything is in top shape. I’ll post pictures of kress carrier parts later .
Worked on the scratch built kress cab tonight. Machined {with the help of my dremel} more of the parts for the rear of the carrier. Still waiting to get my mitts on the Norscot scraper for the front half of the machine.
I also found something else to use for the yoke ,instead of using the bic pens, for the reciever arms. This thing is gonna look just like the drawing…or at least I hope.
Nice job on the scrapbox! So you’re gonna use an HO scraper for the front part? Maybe you can get the mega-sized rear wheels by cannibalizing a 1:50 norscot…
Not a bad idea using 1:50 wheels. I have a pair of old lego wheels that match the drawing wheels to a T. But I like your idea even better, that would look even more impressive using 1:50 wheels.
Like I always say…bigger is better!!!
If I can get my wife off my back , long enough to finnish this project. I’ll have photos to share soon. I had a thought also…I’m thinking about every part I cut ,making a template for others to build this same carrier.
Ken whats your view on a template, is it something you would be intrested in ?
Patrick, that would be great if had the time to build one - but between the honey dues, and my quest to get metal wheels applied to every piece of rolling stock - my hands are tied. Are you planning to publish it on your photobucket site? I’ll also put it on mine if you want…
I’ll most likely post on both, if you don’t mind it on your web page. I think most steel mill modelers don’t model the heavy equipment ,found in large mills. Also this being the second model I’ve built…hopefully some-one would have an easier time building from a template than scratch building one all together.
Sure, I let you know ,when I get better detailed photos of the whole build process. I’ll also have to get a scanner for the finnished parts for a template.
