Hi all. I have always had an interest in trains horns. I was talking to someone who I know collects horn, said that he used to get alot of his stuff from scrap yards, and from a railroads garbage can. I was thinking of doing the same thing but I dont know of any scrap yards or anything like that in the Dupage county area of Illinois. I am really not looking to do anything illegal cause I know sometimes railroads have problems with people stealing horns. I was wondering if anyone had any information on this subject. Thanks Colin
Try going to a scrap yard, I would not go to a railroad garbage can as that would be on railroad property.
I did some brief looking for a scrap yard near by and nothing, are there any you know of in the Chicagoland area?
There is a few in Chicago…but good luck at this point horns are worth $$ and they don’t give them away, I don’t collect horns, but my friend does and he had to jump through hoops to get one for free and it has a cracked bracket. (truckers and collectors have made them valuable) I’ve been told you are looking at 500 bucks for a common horn type.
Give up. Scrap yards have to return useable parts to the railroad. Even on a frreight car the trucks, drawheads, brake valves, air reservoirs , and somtimes even handbrake wheels are on the return list. Any horn worth having is on it.
