Scrap/junk Yard Model

Dear Folk,

Did MR ever do an article on modeling an HO scrap/junk yard?

Does anyone have any links to Youtube videos that show a good HO scrap/junk yard?

Thanks,

Mike

Neither of those, but i did build a small scrapyard for my Transition Era HO layout.

I found a few piles of scrap and junk at various train show over the years, and kept them around until I had the place. I painted them all with spray and acrylics. A bit closer view:

The plank fencing is made from coffee stirrers. I scratched the small building from plastic sheets. The rusty cars were probably cereal box prizes I had painted decades ago, but they were not suitable for my layout, so I used Instant Rust and lots of paint on them to to turn them into junkers.

Mr. B,

Awesome job on those cars!!!

It doesn’t come close to Mr. B’s work (IMHO).

He does a good job of building a basic junkyard. He has a couple vids on it.

I believe there is a step by step article on salvaging a salvage yard in the April 2022 issue of the Magazine.

On a previous HO layout my scrap yard needed some crushed cars. I used plastic vehicles that I put in a vise. I tightened the vise while I held a butane torch to them. The plastic softened and kept tightening the vise until the vehicle was about half it’s normal height. The I weathered them and stacked them about 3 or 4 high. They also made nice looking loads in a gondola.

One of our departed member built a fine scrap yard to fit into an unusual space on his layout. We used to see Reggie’s quite a bit.
