Scratch-builder's score

27-3

No not that kind of score. I was in the art store with my wife and I came across some wooden rulers. They were 3/16" x 1" by 12" of some of the straightest-grain poplar I’ve seen–for .21

I got 5. They had yardsticks for .71. I got one. Perfect complement to my popsicle sticks and this guy.

Spacemouse, I would like to know where you got your saw. I would like to be the owner of one.

Also, what are your thoughts on it, what will it do and won’t do? Thanks. Mike

No doubt! That’s a nice looking little saw!

It’s from MicroMark, and it one kick-butt son of a gun. As a general contractor I know tools and I’ve broken my share.

Limits.

Few. When I get cuts around 1/32 and less the wood will sometimes get stuck in the blade opening. I haven’t bogged it down yet, but so far I’ve been building lots of stuff with popsicle sticks. I don’t expect it to cough with these rulers.

Thanks Spacemouse. I have been thinking it would be good for making the stringers and braces and the such for trestles as well as other model structures. What are the limits as far as what thickness it will cut? Can you make ‘‘toothpicks’’ from a 1X4? Thanks. Mike

Google proxxon.com and check out suppliers. Thay are the makers of the Microlux. I got a reconditioned saw way under retail. Gary

I’d use my 10" saw and cut them into 1/4 strips, then work them into toothpicks from there. I don’t think I’d go much above 1/4, but I’ve not tried it. Will though when I get the opportunity.

With prices like that, the Old Dog must ask, why didn’t you buy a lot more? Great finds like that don’t come along every day.

Have fun

I guess I wanted to work with the wood a bit and see how it works out. If it does, there might be a few trestles in it.
