I have a similar question.
Does anyone know how to attach a car directly to the axels rather than the wheels? I am trying to model the rocket sled in the movie “The Great Race” (directed by Blake Edwards).
I’ve seen the same thing on ore cars. Heres a picture.

you can buy frame mount journals to do exactly what you want from http://www.ozarkminiatures.com/
Use their search to look for journals, they list slate car journals which are what you need. In effect they are a flat mounting plate to which is attached a tube that the axle goes through, the flat plate is mounted on the bottom of the wagon frame.
ilikelivesteam (Why doesn’t anyone use real names on this forum?) the axle ends go into those holes in the middle of the journal. You need to make sure that the frames on which you mount the journals are the correct distance apart or the axle will either fall out or bind. We’ll be covering this in the scratch build class.

Are the journals you are talking about 7/8n2 scale?

The ones for the scratchbuilding class are for 1/20 to 1/24 scale. However Ozark does produce journals like this in 7/8" scale along with a bunch of other 7/8"scale items like Link & Pin coupler pockets.
Thought about modeling that rocketsled myself, one day. Maybe next year at the BTS in Long Beach if they have a rocket drag races…
Best I can suggest is to notch out a section of the frame, assuming wood or styrene and use brass tube sleeves slightly bigger than the axle mounted into the notched areas. glued in with a little epoxy, a little light oil to lubricate the bearing and it should run pretty smoothly as long as the axle mounts are square and there isnt too much play in the axle.

I was wondering if anyone else considered the idea.
I’m thinking of powering the sled with a railbuss motorblock but if I decide to push it with a locomotive i would like to know (cover all contingencies[;)])
If 7/8n2 scale is the wrong thing then I would have to say that i can’t find the right thing.
So if anyone knows if it’s the wrong thing please let me know.

Cable Clips the little white ones for small round cable and have a nail in one side.
replace nail with small screw and flat washer instant inside axel boxes
we aint fancy but we are cheap[:D]

Scott I was thinking of using an actual Este’s model rocket moter, but only if there is a model train drag race next year at the BTS, otherwise I’ll have no place to run it. [:p]
The journals Phil mentioned from Ozark, are probably the right ones to be looking for outside journals, inside bearings will require a sleeve of some sort.

Might I suggest LGB wheels. They are great and I have used them as well as their Mogul chassis for my Battery Operated Grand Canyon Express which I bought a KB Toy for $30.00. It was a great deal and it dosen’t look half bad.
