Scratch or kit??

Many people submit photos of buildings, bridges etc, then foget to tell you if it’s a scratchbuilt or a kit, remember lots of people actually build things from scraps, any information on the project would be helpful.

Depends on the purpose of the post, doesn’t it? Sometimes the subject is not so much the building as the scene that is done with it, like the use of figures in front of the (Heljan/Concor kit) theater.

In this case, I thought it was more interesting to mention the use of the photoetched logging details (don’t remember if they were Republic Loco Works or what) as a storefront display at Hervil Saw Shop (common Heljan/Concor/Walthers Courthouse Square kit)

Of course, when I say this was Lat Lattimore’s barn as it appeared at a 1976 layout tour, there is no need to explain that it is NOT a kit, is there?

You lost me here, all I wanted to know if it’s a kit or scratch, I don’t know the names of kit manufacturers (what does that matter) It’s nice to know the level of proficiency of the craftsman, Am I supposed to know if Lat Lattimore’s barn is a kit, I’m lost here.

When I first started posting pictures, I thought that any interested viewers would post questions if they wanted to know more about a particular part of the scene. I soon found that there were those that liked pictures but weren’t too curious about their content, and those that didn’t like pictures, but were curious as to why I would post a picture. [%-)][sigh] I happen to like posting pictures, as I feel that “every picture tells a story”, but if you’ve got questions about a picture, don’t be afraid to ask. Most people appreciate the interest and are only too pleased to elaborate for interested viewers. Here’s a picture, and a run-down of what’s what.

The structure in the foreground is scratchbuilt, as is the large station in the background, and the structure in the middle of the scene is, from left-to-right, a kitbashed Walthers Vulcan Foundry, kitbashed parts from an MDC 3-in-1 kit, and a kitbashed LifeLike Bottling Plant. The steam loco at left is a modified Proto USRA 0-8-0, and the crane partially visible at the left edge of the photo is a modified Kibri kit. The water tower in the left background is scratchbuilt, and sits atop a barely-visible structure made from DPM modular components. The concrete retaining wall in the centre of the picture, along with the bridge girder at the right edge are both scratchbuilt from styrene. The only kit built as the manufacturer intended is the Jordan truck at right. Track is by Atlas, with Woodland Scenics ballast and ground foam, the power poles are from Walthers, I think, and the source of the fire hydrant is unknown.

Of course, this also illustrates why most don’t elaborate on the picture without further prompting, and also why many seem to not like photos. [swg][:D]
