Scratchbuilding turnouts

I was reading some of my old Garden Railways magazines from 1997, and Marc’s articles on scratchbuilding track really appealed to me. I just began receiving the magazine last year, and bought some older years off of Ebay, but I don’t have any magazines yet from 1999-2006. Did Marc ever write a followup article on how to scratchbuild switches? I have read articles in Model Railroader about building them in HO and other scales, but never in the larger scale. Is is similar? I know Barry Boggs and others cast their own frogs from epoxy, and that sounds interesting. Since I have such a big gap in my collection, I am lost as to whether articles in this area were ever published. Can someone help?

It’s not THE article, but it’s got some good tips:

Lots of other neat stuff at that site.

Another good place:

The second link was great, but the first one wouldn’t open for me.

Pete Thornton wrote an article on building switches sometime around 1999 - 2001. He hangs out over on MyLargeScale.com, so you may have luck contacting him through there. His methods pretty much mirror the ones I used to build my switches, so I can vouch for their effectiveness.

Sorry I missed this post, scoobster. Few articles have been done on scratchbuilding turnouts, but I have two:
August 1989 by Dick Livingston p. 50
August 1999 by Brian Watt p. 68

I am not sure of the availability of these issues. You can email customerservice@kalmbach.com or call 800-533-6644 and ask. If all else fails, you can buy a photocopy of that article.

a number of years ago, Marc did an excellent article on multigauge turnouts. This post reminds me that I need to go back and look to see if there’s a template with the article as I need some!

Thanks Rene. I will check out the local shows and online to see if I can find those issues, and if not, will call Kalmbach. I seem to remember seeing an article on multigauge turnouts too, but cannot remember where I saw it. Hum…
