I need info on SD40-2 NS i seen some with becons and some with out.
Which engines have them also other roads as well please.
For what its worth, this is the general setup that I see on most of the SD-40-2’s these days as they roll through Carrollton, Texas ( a little north of Dallas).
It appears that becons were last used just prior to the implementation of ditch lights in the mid 1990’s.

i have found a few now with the lights. and athrean has brought back ns sd40-2’s im happy now.
beacons were used up thru the 80’s not sure when they were taken off. i did see an sw switching a yard with a beacon.

Beacons can still be found on some engines, but as were mentioned earlier, most were removed when they recieved dich lights. A friend of mine that works for the UP said that they are still useful in yard and swiching service, as they rotate and throw light off of adjacent sitting cars, not just light onto the path of the loco.
Beacons disappeared from locomotive roofs after the introduction of ditch lights. Today, beacons on locomotive roofs, generally indicate an Remote Control Operated locomotives. The beacons flash when the locomotive is operating in remote mode, and are dark when in manned mode.
