came across this most unusual looking SD40-2 with a CAT engine:http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=98097 . Looks like they took some SD70ACE or similar radiator sections and added it on a rebuild SD40. So I wonder if this radiator is required because the CAT needs more cooling then the EMD diesel? Also because it is a rental unit from PRSX it could theoretically show up anywhere. It would certainly be an interesting kit bash job and a unique model to have on the roster.
That is an “ultra-cool” looking unit. My wife’s cousin models the modern day scene and is nuts about six axle power. He’s done some minor kitbashing before, but I know this locomotive will definetly catch his eye after I tell him about it.
Guys,
Does Cannon stock those high profile radiator wings?
That’s an interesting unit, may have to build one.
Am I imagining things or did the dynamic brakes get yanked during the rebuild? I don’t see any radiator fans in the middle of the hood in any of the pics. [%-)]
If this is the same unit we saw in Paducah, then the only fans we saw on it were the 3 over the radiators. We slowed down to get a good look at it as we drove over the bridge at the entrace to the NRE yard, but we saw it from the rear and didn’t realize it may have been a rebuilt SD40-2. We assumed it was an SD70.
I think I’m going to give this one a try as I think I have all the ingredients. I have a spare Kato SD40-2 and some leftover RailPower SD90 kits. I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress.
Well since it’s on both the MR and Trains threads, I’ll post from a modeling standpoint this time. I think it would be an interesting thing to try, maybe someone can do it at the same time as those EMD cabbed MoPac units. I can’t even paint my models that well though, much less try anything like this.
Wow, this certainly makes it feel like everyones spying on me. A few weeks ago there was some tread that was talking about SD40’s being rebuilt and I threw out there an idea of making of mine. The name would have been something like SD40-3M, or SD40-3MAC. It would have looked pretty much like what was pictured accept with an SD70 cab.
And also, taken from the website directly:
In 2007, Caterpillar acquired Progress Rail and launched an exciting new direction for the locomotive group. With the leadership of the largest diesel engine manufacturer in the world, Progress Rail Services began adding new Caterpillar engines to locomotives. By replacing old inefficient engines with new clean technology CAT engines, the next generation of locomotives had begun. Now you can take your tired old locomotive and breathe new life into it with a re-powered locomotive from Progress Rail Services with a Caterpillar engine.
I may just model one for my RR, as they do have SD40-2’s in their roster.
