SD40 and SD40-2 High hood differances??

Hi Guys, using this great guide i found- http://www.nsdash9.com/harpe/harpe.html Im in the process of buying all the nescesary parts to build a high hood SD40-2 in N&W paint.

However, could you answer a couple of questions for me please. Firstly, what are the exsternal differances between an SD40 and an SD40-2 high hood?

Whats the differance between an SD40 early shell and a mid shell?

Thanks.

The SD40 was produced between 1966 and through 1971. The SD40-2 started production them and went through several phases. The SD40-2 was about 3’ longer due to the use of the new HTC trucks that replaced the older Flexicoil design. Research in the Internet will be required to ferret out the changes. The above web site has a pretty good step-by-step description. Research is part of the FUN!

As mentioned, the SD40-2 frame is longer, and since the body is the same size that gives the extra-long “porches” at the ends of the walkways.

Standard -2 vs. non-2 spotting features also apply (sight glass on hood door engineer’s side, cab roof overhange at rear of cab, larger battery boxes). Other details like radiator screens and fans, dynamic brakes will differ between earlier and later unit orders. You have to work off photos to determine the appropriate details to add/replace/make sure is on the starting model.
