Where the prototypes built on SD45 frame/chassis? I have a Athearn SD40T-2 and its frame is longer then a standard athearn SD40-2 I was wondering if this is why. But I thought they all where which gave them the distinctive end platforms.

Don’t know what the T stands for, but I have 2 of the SD40-2 with the long snoots- I thought it was just a longer version of the SD40- wish I had a SD45 to compare it to.
The “T” means it is a “Tunnel Motor” which the SP and Rio Grande bought to combat the loco overheating in tunnels and long snow sheds.

SD40s and SD45s are the same length, I think. SD40-2s and SD45-2s are longer than non -2 versions and the same length as each other. SD40T-2s and SD45T-2s are longer than all of those and are the same length as each other. Contrary to what the Diesel Spotters Guide says, the SD40T-2s are longer than the SD40-2s.
