The (only) 3 60MACS were the testbed/demonstrators that EMD used to test the capability of AC traction. The 60 series was the standard at the time, so that particular model was used for the basic design. However, when the railroads (BN was the big push behind this development for use in the PRB) decided they wanted the technology, they skipped straight to the 70MAC, sight unseen! Bit of a leap of faith, but EMD proved that the technology was viable, so it should work just as well with more h.p.
The 60MAC’s (I think) are still in service as part of EMD’s test fleet. I have seen a bunch a pictures of them lashed up to newer models on the test tracks to be used to simulate a loaded train using their dynamic brakes.

There were 4 SD60MACs BN 9500 - 9503 , after the extended test period they were returned to EMD, the result of their testing was the SD70MAC, but they were prototypes with non-standard equipment and wiring. Originally the were to be rebuilt to SD70MAC standards but the cost was too high, so EMD built 4 new SD70MACs to replace them BN 9713 - 9716 (now BNSF same numbers). As mentioned the four locomotives are used by EMD at the Pueblo, CO test track to help test new locomotives.
John, I thought I heard last year that one of them was in LaGrange. Would you know for certain if all four are in Colorado ?

Maybe EMD should donate some of those H-engined SD90MACs to the TTC since nobody wants them:)
Dale you could be right the photo I saw showing all 4 at the test center was taken about four years ago. Security is pretty tight at the Center so reports of what is on site are few and far between.
OK. One of life’s little mysteries.
