IIRC, GP7 & SD7 handrails and stanchions are fabricated using 1.25" or 1.5" rod, with a casting at the top/bottom of the stanchion. This includes at least some early GP9’s(ph 1). EMD changed over to a ‘stamped’ stanchion sometime in 1954, but still used the same rod for the handrails. .015 brass wire works well for HO.

Many thanks Jim, I have been looking for the answer for a long time. Now I can get started on building the handrails/stanchions for three Life-Like SD7’s. I will use a combination of wire and styrene.
I model the Milw too and have been following Lloyd Keyser’s excellent article on SD7’s from the 2000 Mainline Modeler, July/August issue.
