SD70ACE Question

Does any body know if the SD70ACE has the standard AAR control stand or does it have deck top controls like every other locomotive in this country?[:D]
Thanks, James

I suspect the ‘default’ is the desktop control stand. But, the customer can order whatever their preference and budget can handle. The UP ordered their 1000 unit SD70M order delivered with standard ARR control stands. The railroad industry has a lot of ‘road specific’ feature on engines. This can vary from type of A/C, control stands, air brake equipment, water cooler, and even electrical outlets in the cab. The two large builders(GE & EMD) work with the customer on what they really need for an order, and it can take some time from the proposal to delivery(or even start of construction) of the engines.

Nope. They have conventional control stands. They don’t do the desktops anymore, worst idea ever.

4884bigboy, Your right those desktop designs are the worst. Thanks for the info on that JRBERNIER. I appreciate it.
James

What’s so bad about desktops? I’m not a railroader, so this opinion is somewhat uninformed. I have been in several locomotives, and to me the desktop controls look more comfortable. Why is’t this the case?

Yes James, they do have standard control stands, becasue all the hoggers were b***** about hurting their backs by hunching over. Ask your dad James.

BTW Matt, in order to reach the controls you have to hunch WAY over.[}:)][}:)] Try doing that for 12 hours and youll get my drift…[^]

Max!!! How would my dad know? He doesn’t deal with new locomotives so there. He wouldn’t know even if he had it as a model.

He runs -9’s doesnt he??
Ask him if it hurts his back!

I had no idea they were going back to conventional control stands! I like that idea as the desktop controls just never seemed right on a diesel locomotive. Now if we can only get rid of wide cabs.

The SD70ACE’s have conventional stands. I never cared for the desktops or the all in one screens. I may be crusty, but I like the regular stand, and regular gauges. The best thing to come down the way, is the safety cab. Wide doors, quite cabs, nice seats and you don’t have to crawl throught the trap door, to use the can.

I’m not sure, but I think the GEVO units have regular control stands too.

Control stands are much better. I was in an engine a few months ago and the engineer said he likes the stands much better because he can sit back, relax, and control the train without hurting his back.
