SD70ACE's

I was wondering how close or far is an SD80 or SD90 from the SD70ACE from a visual standpoint. I was looking at a photo’s of SD70ACE, SD80, and SD90 and I can’t really tell a difference.

I ask because I would like to model an SD70ACE and was thinking a KATO SD80 or SD90 would be close enough. I know the rivet counters will object, but I am not one so if either was close enough that would work for me.

Maybe I missed something.

well for a start a SD70ACe is shorter than a SD80 or 90 so you would have to cut the shell down and put it on an SD70Mac chassis, so you would probably be better off buying a brass model, if you can afford it.

I don’t know what scale you’re working in, but if its HO then Tower 55 will be bringing the SD70ACe out soon.

An SD70ACe is WAY shorter than an SD80MAC/SD90MAC, for one thing. The radiator flares are not as big and ACe’s don’t have marker lights (SD80MACs) or nose mounted headlights (SD90MACs). Plus every SD80MAC and SD90MAC (save for the last few) have a much different cab than an ACe. I don’t know, they look different to me…

Dude, save your money and buy a Tower 55. Its worth it.

A main difference that I can think of off the top of my head is that there are 3 radiator fans on 80 and 90, but only 2 on the ACe.

If you are modeling the BNSF like your name says, the SD70ACe is used a lot by the MRL. Being that the BSNF uses Montana Rail Link’s lines, that would be a nice addition to your layout. Nothing wrong with adding a little flovor here and there. Heres a pic for your viewing pleasure http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=280688

After looking at more prototype photo’s I agree with everyone. The 80/90 would not be a very good sub. for the 70ACe. They are much different now that I have seen some good photo’s.

Thanks for the help.
